Is there a problem using just any battery for your home solar system…?

When doing the Car battery vs Solar battery coThe scientific make up of solar and car batteries is very different. Therefore using a car battery for solar might sound like a great move which is cheaper. But it may not benefit you as much as you think.

car batteries or solar batteries : depth of discharge

image showing that you cannot use all energy from the battery
there is a limit to the amount of power you can use from each battery type

Both are batteries but their uses are different. Yes a car battery can be used in a solar system. However, a car battery can not fully discharge the power your solar panels would have charged the whole day. Its make up requires it to be fully charged all the time but not allowing it to release all the energy stored. Only about 10% can be discharged making a car battery a shallow cycle. On the other hand is a deep cycle battery which is the proper Solar battery. A deep cycle battery is designed to release 50% of the energy. It discharges most of the power stored, making it a better fit for continuous power for your home lights and entertainment.

Car batteries or solar batteries: Length of power usage

As what they are meant for , car batteries release a fast gush of power for a very short time required to start a car. Like a rabbit fast but covering a short distance. Hence this makes unsuitable for a solar system which requires a slow and steady release of power. Solar batteries are perfect for this as they slowly release power charged during the day. This makes them last longer like a tortoise slow and covering a long distance.

Car batteries or solar batteries : battery durability

When purchasing a battery you want something that lasts long and to avoid repurchase of a product. Durability is very important. Well with a car battery , you cant avoid replacing it quite sooner because of wrong battery application. It is plain the two batteries thrive in different applications, thus getting the correct tool for the job always saves you money in the long run. A properly sized battery will give you up to 5 to 10 years with correct maintenance and charging and discharge procedures. however, using a car battery for solar purpose will barely give youa year of good performance. we humbly urge you to chose wisely.
